Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal’s Pravin Gandhi College of Law, Mumbai, presents a Two-Day Online National Conference on Dimensions of Democracy 8th & 9th August 2020

The Two-Day Online National Conference on Dimensions of Democracy is organised by SVKM’s Pravin Gandhi College of Law, Mumbai, and will be held on 8 – 9 August 2020.

The concept of democracy is central to our contemporary political lexicon, yet agreement on how to conceptualize democracy is far from widespread. This online conference aims to facilitate debates and initiate dialogues to explore the conceptual foundations and practical ramifications of the several aspects of democracy. Further, via a series of lectures, we seek to instil a deeper sense of democracy among our participants by analysing the procedural shell, the cultural pith, the human empowerment and the deeper core of the concept. In the course of the deliberations, we hope to explore the varied theories and models of this unique form of governance, including the evolution and types of democracy, the existing and new interlinkages between democracy and governance, the conferment of rights and duties, the effectiveness of democratic governance, and the role of democracy in human empowerment. An interdisciplinary approach to democracy also incorporates economics, liberal arts, architecture, science and technology. We endeavour to understand the future of democracy in the era of international relations and the growing virtual world.

This online national conference will comprise of a series of lectures by eminent speakers followed by paper presentations by participants. A special lecture on Law and Democracy will be delivered by Justice (Retd.) Jasti Chelameswar. The group of participants includes students, professionals and academicians from across the nation.
